Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a webinar titled "Improving Lives Through Employment and Education" presented by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The webinar focused on the Clinical Support System for Serious Mental Illness (CSS-SMI) initiative, which is funded by SAMHSA and implemented by the APA.

The webinar highlighted the importance of employment and education for individuals with serious mental illness and discussed the principles of evidence-based supported employment. It emphasized that many people with severe mental illness want to work and can advance their careers through education. The Individual Placement and Support (IPS) model was presented as an evidence-based practice for supported employment. The webinar also addressed the barriers to employment and education, including stigma, low expectations, inadequate finances, and lack of support.

The IPS principles were discussed, including open eligibility, focus on competitive employment, rapid job search, systematic job development, client preferences guiding decisions, individualized long-term supports, integration with treatment, and benefits counseling. The effectiveness of IPS supported employment was highlighted, with 26 out of 27 randomized controlled trials showing a significant advantage for IPS. The webinar also discussed the role of frontline providers in supporting employment and education for individuals with serious mental illness.

Supported education was briefly mentioned, with the lack of an evidence-based model and mixed results from outcome studies highlighted. The role of IPS specialists in supporting education was discussed, including intake, engagement, assessment, school selection and application, enrollment support, and ongoing educational support.

The webinar concluded by providing resources for IPS practitioners, supervisors, and vocational rehabilitation counselors, and inviting participants to request consultations and download the SMI Adviser mobile app. It also mentioned upcoming webinars on sharing clinical notes with patients and the benefits, risks, and challenges associated with this practice.
