Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a presentation on inclusive, evidence-based practices in gender non-binary mental health services. The presentation was part of an initiative by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The presentation covered various topics including the identification and implementation of evidence-based mental health services for individuals who identify as gender diverse, non-binary, transgender, or with other gender fluid identities. It also highlighted the importance of culturally mindful and community-engaging models in providing services to this population. The presentation emphasized the impact of social determinants of health, such as stigma, poverty, healthcare access, and exposure to trauma, on physical and mental well-being.

The session had several learning objectives, including reviewing contemporary terms and concepts associated with trans and gender non-binary individuals, evaluating clinical practices for addressing their needs, incorporating person-centered service interventions, and discussing challenges in culturally mindful training for healthcare teams.

The presentation provided an overview of gender, gender roles, and sexual orientation, emphasizing that these are complex constructs influenced by societal and cultural norms. It also discussed the changes made in the diagnostic criteria for gender dysphoria in the DSM-5 and highlighted the importance of institutional affirmation and reducing stigma in improving the mental health and well-being of transgender and gender non-binary individuals.

The presentation included a case study of an individual struggling with self-harm and suicidal ideation and discussed the importance of gender affirmation, coping skills development, and addressing broader psychosocial needs for transgender and non-binary individuals. It also provided information on model programs and resources available to support transgender and gender non-binary individuals.

The presentation concluded by emphasizing the need for research, education, and workforce training to increase the competency and awareness of healthcare providers in addressing the needs and experiences of transgender and non-binary individuals. The audience was encouraged to assess their organizations' efforts in providing culturally mindful systems and to explore ways to increase access to appropriate care for this population.
