Pdf Summary
This document is a summary of a webinar titled "Nutrition and Exercise for Wellness and Recovery (NEW-R): A Health Activation Intervention," which is part of the Clinical Support System for Serious Mental Illness (CSS-SMI) initiative implemented by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The webinar focuses on the NEW-R program, which is designed to provide a weight loss program specifically for individuals in recovery from serious mental illness.

The need for a health activation intervention for people with serious mental illness is highlighted due to high rates of chronic illness, lack of access to preventative care, and the presence of co-morbid health conditions such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and increased mortality related to COVID-19. Factors associated with health conditions in this population include poverty, social disadvantage, lifestyle factors like lack of physical activity and poor diet, and obesogenic environments.

The NEW-R program is based on the principles of skills training, cognitive-behavioral strategies, and environmental supports. It consists of eight sessions that cover various topics such as healthier eating, reading food labels, portion control, physical activity, eating out, meal planning, thrifty shopping, and cooking. Each session includes components like opening quotes, instruction and active learning, physical activity, goal setting, reminders, and success stories.

The program aims to improve participants' perceived competence for exercise and healthy living, overall health-promoting lifestyle, nutrition, and spirituality. A randomized controlled trial of the NEW-R program showed positive outcomes in these areas. However, there were no significant differences in weight loss between the intervention and control groups.

Important considerations when implementing the NEW-R program include being intentional about making positive changes, focusing on making small changes that are achievable and impactful, and creating an environment that supports health and wellness.

Overall, the NEW-R program provides a structured and evidence-based approach to promoting nutrition and exercise for wellness and recovery in individuals with serious mental illness.
