Pdf Summary
Zero Suicide is an initiative implemented by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The goal of Zero Suicide is to prevent suicide in healthcare settings by taking a systems approach. Studies have shown that individuals who attempt suicide often have recent healthcare visits, highlighting the importance of healthcare systems in suicide prevention.

The initiative is based on the belief that suicide is preventable and focuses on seven core components: identify individuals at risk, engage and develop a care management plan, provide evidence-based treatment, ensure smooth transitions between care settings, train a competent workforce, use data to measure and improve outcomes, and create a supportive and accountable culture.

Addressing the needs of individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) is an important part of the Zero Suicide framework. SMI individuals have a higher risk of suicide, and systems that implement Zero Suicide show reductions in suicide deaths and improvements in care quality. To support the implementation of Zero Suicide, there are resources available such as the Zero Suicide Toolkit, which provides tools, strategies, and resources for organizations.

The initiative aligns with the National Patient Safety Goal to reduce the risk of suicide and is recommended by the Interdepartmental Serious Mental Illness Coordinating Committee. By adopting Zero Suicide as a model, healthcare systems can work towards reducing suicide rates, improving the care of individuals with SMI, and saving lives.

Attendees are encouraged to join the Zero Suicide Listserv for networking and access to resources. Ultimately, the initiative aims to create a culture of suicide prevention in healthcare settings and improve outcomes for individuals at risk.
