Transitional age youth with serious mental illness and comorbid intellectual developmental disability have complex health needs. Their diagnoses and comorbid conditions require much detailed attention, differential, and collateral investigation. It is essential that the interdisciplinary care team collaborate effectively with families and others in formulating optimal treatment plans. While psychopharmacological treatments are limited to those indicated for serious mental illness, intellectual developmental disability treatment options should be evaluated carefully in examining both risks and benefits of available options. Both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments will be reviewed as well as the legal framework in which treatment occurs.
