Aerobic Exercise and Neurocognition in Serious Mental Illness: Efficacy and Clinical Applications via Novel Technologies

Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) display substantial neurocognitive difficulties that negatively impact their daily functioning. These neurocognitive deficits are often accompanied by highly sedentary lifestyles that contribute to such difficulties. One intervention that has shown promise in enhancing neurocognition in this population is aerobic exercise. This presentation will discuss the use of novel digital technologies, specifically active-play video games, as part of aerobic exercise interventions to enhance neurocognition in individuals with schizophrenia. It will describe how such technologies can be leveraged to enhance physical activity in individuals with SMI along with considerations for dosage, intensity, and safety issues.

How to Earn Credit

Participants who wish to earn AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ or a certificate of participation may do so by completing all sections of the course, including viewing the full video and submitting an evaluation. A multiple-choice quiz is provided based on the content. A passing score of 75% must be achieved. After evaluating the program, course participants will be provided with an opportunity to claim hours of participation and print an official CME certificate (physicians) or certificate of participation (other disciplines) showing the completion date and hours/credits earned.
